  6. 1950s as a hot-hitting and fielding second baseman and in 1977
  7. as a tactically shrewd manager; of injuries suffered when his
  8. pickup truck, driven by a friend who was charged with drunken
  9. driving, skidded off an icy road; in Johnson City, N.Y.
  10. Notorious for his barroom brawls, Martin was fired as Yankee
  11. helmsman four times by team owner George Steinbrenner, and was
  12. forced to resign once after remarking about slugger Reggie
  13. Jackson and Steinbrenner, "One's a born liar, and the other's
  14. convicted" -- a reference to the boss's guilty plea for illegal
  15. contributions to Richard Nixon's 1972 campaign.
